The 5 Love Languages: Find Yours (And Theirs)

Understanding how you give and receive love can transform your relationship. Here's how to figure out your love language.

Ever felt like you’re giving your partner everything, but they don’t seem to notice? Or worse — they don’t seem to care?

The problem might not be the amount of love you’re giving, but how you’re giving it.

The 5 Love Languages

According to Dr. Gary Chapman, there are five primary ways people express and experience love:

1. Words of Affirmation

If this is your love language, you feel most loved when you hear “I love you,” receive compliments, or get words of encouragement.

How to speak it: Send good morning texts, leave sticky notes, say “I’m proud of you.”

2. Quality Time

Nothing says “I love you” like undivided attention. If this is their language, put the phone away and be present.

How to speak it: Plan date nights, take walks together, have conversations without screens.

3. Physical Touch

This isn’t just about sex. Hand-holding, hugs, cuddling on the couch — physical proximity is how they feel secure.

How to speak it: Touch their arm while talking, greet them with a hug, hold hands during movies.

4. Acts of Service

Actions speak louder than words. Making coffee, doing the dishes, running an errand — these say “I care” more than any gift.

How to speak it: Notice what stresses them out and help. Fill up their gas tank. Make them breakfast.

5. Receiving Gifts

This isn’t about materialism. It’s about the thought — the “I saw this and thought of you” factor.

How to speak it: Bring home their favorite snack, pick up a small souvenir, give thoughtful presents.

How to Discover Your Language

Pay attention to what you complain about most in relationships. If you often say “They never spend time with me,” your language is probably Quality Time. If you say “They never help around the house,” it might be Acts of Service.

Once you know yours and theirs, you can stop wasting effort on gestures that don’t land and start giving love in a way they’ll actually feel.
